Last year, Dyson introduced a revised design to their flagship Supersonic Nural hair dryer: Supersonic r. The r signifies the dryer’s shape, literally a lowercase r. This fast-drying, high velocity beauty is both smaller and lighter than its predecessor.

[L to R: Dyson Supersonic r, Airwrap i.d. Multi-styler, Airstrait straightener, Supersonic Nural]
The Supersonic r contains integrated RFID chips, so that when you’ve got an attachment in place and have found the perfect combination of heat and airflow, it will remember the last-used setting for the next time! There’s also a cool shot function button that when pressed immediately changes the heat to cool when needed.
Technically speaking, Dyson has engineered the Supersonic r to spin at 110,000rpm, to form a controlled air jet. 10 heater foils have been incorporated into the curve of the dryer for air to travel through.
The dryer’s attachments lock in place magnetically and the filter is removable for cleaning and product longevity. When the filter needs cleaning, a small LED light right above the filter (towards the bottom of the handle) will flash.
Cleaning the Filter
Once unplugged and allowed to cool, simply push down to separate the filter from the dryer, pull it apart to release it from the power cord, separate the inner lining from the external cage, wipe the cage inside and out with a dry line-free cloth, rinse the filter under warm running water, scrub the interior and exterior of the filter with a pea-sized amount of clarifying shampoo, give it a final rinse and squeeze dry with a paper towel, allow both parts to fully dry, then assemble back onto the dryer.

At 325 grams, the Supersonic r provides better control and gets to harder-to-reach areas of your head, in order to properly dry all sections of your hair. It also uses negatively-charged ions to both control flyaway hair and reduce frizz.
The flyaway attachment’s unique design attracts longer hairs and hides flyaways using the Coandă effect (a jet of air that adheres to a nearby surface).
While the Supersonic r’s shape may look a bit convoluted, let me say this: Holding it in my hand while drying my hair is one of the most pleasing, ergonomic experiences I have had in a long time. The feel of the piece, together with its width and lightweight footprint really speaks volumes about Dyson’s commitment to “solving a problem others ignore”.
The power cord is a bit hefty in comparison to the dryer itself but not as heavy as the original, according to Dyson. For safety, the supersonic r won’t turn on if the attachments or filter aren’t properly attached (the filter LED light will flash white).
Supersonic r Attachments
Pro concentrator – Focuses air right where it’s needed
Powerful air attachment – High-velocity airflow for a fast dry
Wide-tooth comb attachment – Both de-tangles and lengthens hair as it dries
Diffuser – For frizz reduction, defining curls, coils and waves
Flyaway – Hides flyaway hair on finished styles
Included in the box is a deluxe roomy case with a moulded foam tray to stow the dryer (with high-power attachment connected), Pro concentrator, and Flyaway attachment. The Diffuser and Wide-tooth comb live on the bottom, underneath that section. It would be great to see a handle on future editions of the case (we assume that most users keep it on a bathroom counter or bedroom dresser).
Available in two colour combinations: Ceramic Pink/Rose Gold and the newly-minted, limited-edition Jasper Plum (shown in photos); CAD $729.99/USD $569.99
