Maxell Blown Away

Maxell—once a household name thanks to its iconic “Blown Away Guy” ad from the 80’s—is tapping into nostalgia with a new wireless cassette player that blends retro charm with modern upgrades like Bluetooth and USB-C charging.

The updated player lets you enjoy your old mixtapes wirelessly while maintaining high-quality sound, thanks to a precision brass flywheel that ensures smooth, consistent playback.

With cassette sales reportedly surging (doubling in early 2025 after a massive rise over the past decade), Maxell is responding to renewed interest. Still, it’s refreshing to see a trusted brand step in so you don’t have to rely on lesser-known alternatives just to revisit your tapes.

Priced at around CAD $125/USD $75, the player offers Bluetooth support, a headphone jack, and USB-C fast charging that tops up the device in under two hours. Battery life is solid too, with up to 11 hours of wireless playback. There’s even a belt clip included for anyone wanting that authentic old-school vibe.

For those who never had to rewind a cassette with a pencil, this is your chance to experience it firsthand (IYKYK). And for everyone else, it’s an easy way to rediscover those long-forgotten mixtapes without digging through resale sites.

For some reason, the player is not sold via the Maxell website but can be found on Amazon (same goes for cassette tape packs).

This brings back so many memories. I sold all my cassettes when we moved last. Now I don’t have any. Remember what it sounded like when your in-car cassette player would eat the tape? I would quickly eject the tape only to find the tape was caught on something. The cassette tape was ruined. Maxell tapes were my favorite. I can’t even guess how many mix tapes I made using these quality tapes As for the Blown Away Dude, I have that artwork framed on my wall next to my music collection. Thanks for sharing this great information Ariane.

Oh wow, talk about coincidence! The Blown Away Dude is right up on your wall, indeed an iconic figure in the 80’s. Those miserable moments of a destroyed tape live on in most of our collective minds. I wonder whether this newer version lessens the chance of cassette tape fail! Get those pencils out and rewind.
