Hy' s Steakhouse, Vancouver

Hy’s Encore Steakhouse has stood in its original location at 637 Hornby since opening in 1962. This family-owned establishment is the go-to place for special outings, celebrations and for savouring a mean, quality steak. Finally, over 50 years later, Hy’s gives Vancouverites another reason to visit more often: Happy Hour!

After several months of renovations Hy’s has transformed its upstairs banquet area into three connected rooms featuring a contemporary bar that boasts a DJ on select nights. The sit-down cocktail lounge is a long-awaited feature at the esteemed steakhouse and allows up to 80 more diners. Bartender Ryan Shimozowa (pinched from Gotham) can craft any libation of your choice.

Try favourites like an Old Fashioned, a modern mix such as the Vesper or a gin classic like the Vancouver Cocktail. Whether you hanker for a nibble or linger for a full meal, a-la-carte dining is served with Hy’s signature upscale service and elegance.

On the eve of its grand opening, media guests were invited to sip, savour and celebrate the new swish bar. I couldn’t help indulging in a champagne cocktail while savouring the chillaxed vibe. The remodeled space can be booked for private functions and select areas can be closed off via ornate leather doors. Much of the classic 60’s-inspired decor remains, accented with rich mahogany, recessed wine cases and modern banquettes.

Once exterior renovations are complete, the upstairs will have more natural light through large windows enclosed by a balconette. The atmosphere of the refreshed space is relaxed and refined, trademarks of this iconic brand. Hy’s Encore Steakhouse and Cocktail Bar is open for lunch on weekdays and serves dinner seven days a week.
