We’ve recently come across Bellingham, Washington’s women-owned clothing brand Nuu-Muu, a company that specializes in dresses that you can cycle, garden, walk, even do yoga in!
The company began a decade ago when two long-time friends sought an alternative to the same-old athletic apparel on the market. The group of women have since built an inspired community and continue to work together on their line of basic, yet unique and colorful athleisure dresses.
Nuu-Muu sells three styles of dress (Nuu-Muu Classic, Ruu-Muu Back Pocket, Scoop) in a fabulous array of patterns, sized to fit all body types (XXS to 3XL).
Nuu-Muu dresses celebrate femininity and layer nicely with tights, shorts, or worn on their own. You can also add one of their organic cotton/recycled polyester long-sleeved t-shirts to pull over the dress for an extra layer of warmth and style.
I had a Scoop dress in the ETTA pattern sent my way to test-drive on a few bike rides around town. The material is soft, wrinkle-free and stain-resistant, which makes it a great travel dress (in case you were wondering, the ETTA dress is named after American blues queen Etta James).
This A-line dress has a split back pocket with a fabric closure (that hides well!) to stow a few small items; its four-way stretch spandex is breathable and moisture-wicking.
Another bonus: the dresses have built-in SPF 50+! These easy-to-care-for dresses only require a machine wash and hang dry. Wear it from work to dinner; it’s easy to dress them up with a blazer or cardigan.
The silky polyester (83%) and spandex (17%) is not see-through either, and according to the website, will cover most sports bras.
The Nuu-Muu Classic has a slightly higher neck with small rounded cutout in the fabric. The third option, Ruu-Muu Back Pocket, also contains the key-hole design in front with two pockets at the lower back. All Nuu-Muu products are sewn in the USA and range in price from USD $78 to $88. Several designs are also on sale (check the website for sizing availability).
On a giving-back note, Nuu-Muu proudly supports both 1% for the Planet and The Conservation Alliance. They also contribute to Girls on the Run, an organization that helps empower girls to be joyful, healthy, nurturing and confident through an experience-based educational program.
