Pitch Info Session

On Friday, March 30, six brand new short films made in just eight days by some of our best emerging local filmmakers will have their world premiere as part of Crazy8s, Vancouver’s premier short film competition, now in its 13th year.

At a preliminary Crazy8s info session, 118 teams signed up to submit a video pitch, learn more about the program, and how to create a successful short film. Registrants also benefited from an hour long pitch workshop from pitching guru Mickey Rogers.

The quality and diversity of the pitches submitted this year was impressive, and the jury had a tough time narrowing it down, but eventually 40 semi-finalists were selected and invited back to present their pitch in person to a new jury of industry professionals. Through further workshopping and juries, the final six were selected last month.

Each of the six winners received $1,000 plus a production package worth tens of thousands of dollars (donated by generous sponsors) with everything needed to make their film in just 8 Crazy days. This not only included equipment, insurance, permits and an online edit and sound mix, but also a casting session with professional casting agent Kara Eide as well as access to the entire UBCP pool of talent, producer and director workshops. Production took place between March 16 and 23.

This year’s winning films are Camille Mitchell’s A Mother’s Love, Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers’ A Red Girl’s Reasoning, Doreen Manuel’s Babies in the Wall, Andrew Rowe’s Sleepy Stories, Marshall Axani’s The Vessel and Carleen Kyle’s The Weather Girl. Following the gala screening will be an afterparty at Science World (party admission included in the ticket price), featuring music by Maria in the Shower, Nils (of Beats Without Borders), and Timothy Wisdom
