The Vancouver International Fringe Festival offers a huge range of talented performances each year, but did you know that there are several workshops also going on during those 10 days?

Here’s a few to consider:
Free Range Theatre: Site-specific theatre at The Fringe
Date:Monday, September 12, 7 pm
Venue: Wildhorse Canyon Stage at the AGRO Café
Free admission

Lost in Place
[Lost in Place]

What happens when the walls of the theatre come down and site-specific theatre is created? This discussion includes The Only Animal’s Kenrdra Fanconi with some of the Fringe’s onsite program artists, including ITSAZOO’s Chelsea Haberlin (Stay Away from my Boat @$$hole), Seth Soulstein (Lost in Place), Daniel Martin and Dave Mott from Upintheair Theatre. Learn how these artists have embraced site-specific theatre in Vancouver.

This forum is moderated by Heidi Taylor (Dramaturg, Playwrights’ Theatre Centre).

Puppet Magic and Making
Date: Wednesday, September 14, Noon to 3 pm
Cost: $60 ($50 for Fringe Artists and Volunteers)
The workshop includes 90 minutes of puppet-making and 90 minutes of puppet magic!

Brenda the puppet

This workshop is perfect for those who want to learn the magic behind shows like Sesame Street and Fraggle Rock. If you’ve ever wondered how it’s done, join Monster Theatre’s Tara Travis who will transform your knowledge of physical theatre to the art of “hand and rod” (Muppet-style) puppetry.

The creators of this year’s Fringe show “SMILE“, Awkward Stage Productions‘ Sandra Herd and Debbie Wiecke of “I Make Neat Stuff“, will show you how to build your own puppet, as well as provide materials and walk you through the process of making a starter mouth piece to take home and practice with.

Contact awkwardstageproductions [at] shaw [dot] ca for more information and registration. There’s a maximum of 15 people for this workshop.

Intro to Burlesque with Razzle Tassel Productions
Date: Friday, September 16, 1 to 3 pm
Venue: False Creek Community Centre Gym
Cost: $20 ($15 for 2011 Vancouver Fringe artists)

Razzle Tassel
[Razzle Tassel]

Burlesque dance is considered the new yoga, for its powerful combination of exercise, positive self-image and creative expression. Razzle Tassel Productions‘ April, Melody, and Violet will teach an (advanced) introduction into the glamourous world of Neo-Burlesque, right in False Creek! You’ll learn the history of erotic movement, practice classical moves (the bump n’ grind, the shimmy, etc.) and learn the seductive stocking peel and glove removal. The more daring can also try the application of pasties and many ways of twirling a tassel. The two hour session will cap off with a cheeky and titillating burlesque routine for stage or personal use (ahem). This is a ladies workshop only.
