Guernica

On April 26th, 1937, a small town in Spain was bombed. After the first time in his life that he wasn’t painting, Pablo Picasso awoke at the news of this tragedy, and painted figures of the victims of the Guernica bombing, creating a masterpiece.

Guernica

Erika Luckert’s Guernica follows Picasso himself, alone in his studio, visited by the ghosts of the victims. They show him their lives, their stories, and their tragedy, and in the end, Picasso is forced to recreate their deaths in order to find his inspiration for his masterpiece, Guernica.

Guernica

Picasso once said, “every act of creation is first an act of destruction.”

The audience watches as the characters go about their daily business at the village market, unaware of the coming bomb. Picasso’s ideas multiply as he enters the world of the painting. The lives of these imagined characters are revealed, and their market day world becomes as real as the painter’s studio that contains them.

History must take its course, however, and so, with every interaction Picasso creates, he brings his characters closer to death.

Guernica

Guernica debuted in Edmonton last summer, where it was seen at Nextfest and the Edmonton Fringe. It has since been nominated for two Edmonton Sterling Awards: Outstanding Fringe New Work and Outstanding Fringe Director.

“At a festival dominated by comedy and simple one-person shows, this is a fascinating, well-conceived drama that commands your attention and doesn’t let it go.” – Edmonton Journal ★★★★1⁄2
