The Sound of Music

This winter, the hills will come alive with The Sound of Music, playing November 10 to December 24 at the Arts Club’s Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage.

After the show’s initial Arts Club staging in 2019, the von Trapp family are set to make their grand return to the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage in this timeless masterpiece.

Set in pre-WWII Austria, The Sound of Music tells the story of Maria (Chelsea Rose), a spirited young woman who takes a position as a governess to the seven von Trapp children. Through song, dance and a few favourite things, she falls first for the children, and then their widowed father, Captain von Trapp (Damien Atkins).

This iconic musical is filled with Tony, Grammy and Academy Award–winning songs including My Favorite Things, Do-Re-Mi, Climb Ev’ry Mountain, Edelweiss, and of course, The Sound of Music. Audiences can experience the musical magic for themselves and sing along with the cast on November 24 and December 10.

The Sound of Music is based on the real-life story of the von Trapp Family singers, who fled Austria when it was annexed by Germany during World War II, and then proceeded to tour the world as a singing family. Their story has been immortalized on both stage and screen, serving as the inspiration for the original 1959 Broadway production—winner of five Tony Awards. The 1965 film screened worldwide for nearly five years straight due to its immense popularity.

The Arts Club’s Artistic Director Ashlie Corcoran will direct the production for the second time, and stated “This is one of the most beloved musicals of all time and one of my most favourite productions to work on. I am thrilled that we will be once again celebrating the festive season with this piece and am so excited to be working with this extraordinary team.”
