Vancouver’s Vancity Theatre offers a fantastic variety of films throughout the year as well as the annual Vancouver International Film Festival.

They also host several smaller film festivals, including this year’s SPARK Animation 2012 Festival.

Come experience the latest advancements in computer graphics and the world’s best animation and visual effects in this year’s Electronic Theater showcased at the SIGGRAPH 2012 Computer Animation Festival. SPARK is proud to present this special program of “the best of the best,” with a diverse selection of animation from individual artists, animated commercials, cinematics, and excerpts from visual effects feature films.

I’m pretty excited to see Pablo, a 90-minute animated film from the US, make the list. Pablo Ferro is a world renowned film title designer. Stanley Kubrick has called him a genius.

Pablo Ferro

I had the pleasure of interviewing him during my university years, as part of my fourth year final project course. During my years in design school, I aspired to enter the film title design industry after graduation.

Myself and fellow classmate Bruce Braucher spent an hour with Ferro discussing his career, and he even gave us several film acetate samples of his work, including a piece from his 1966 film title creation for “The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming“.

Dr. Strangelove

You’ve probably seen Pablo Ferro’s work. He’s designed titles for Stop Making Sense, Men in Black, Dr. Strangelove, Napoleon Dynamite, LA Confidential, and others. This documentary spans his life from his Havana roots through the pre-Cuban revolution right to his current home located in a garage behind his son’s home. He’s now 77.

Directed by Richard Goldgewicht, the cast includes Jeff Bridges, Andy Garcia, Jon Voight, Robert Downey Sr., Jonathan Demme (who worked with Ferro on Stop Making Sense), Angelica Huston and Stan Lee.

This film is sure to conjure creative juices, as this creative wiz has spawned a generation of young film title designers around the world.
