Seattle, Washington-based Outdoor Research was born out of a need for durable, adventure gear. Founder Ron Gregg built his company on the idea that life is an adventure — having the best gear makes it more fun.
I remember owning Outdoor Research duffel bags and backpacks back in the 1980’s. Since then, their product line has grown immensely in size and variety.
Outdoor Research recently sent us a couple of lightweight jackets (men’s Vindo Hoody, women’s Oberland Hoody) to check out for their warmth, durability and style.
Men’s Vindo Hoody
The Vindo Hoody offers a combination of comfort and warmth in a lightweight format. We especially like the adjustable hood, stand-up collar and pockets for stowing small essentials.
It’s easy to imagine wearing this jacket on our local trails or cycling around town. Outdoor Research designed the Vindo with an ultrasonic quilted polyester woven shell to keep wind off your back, synthetic insulation and wool/polyester blended Alpin-Wool™ Plus in the arm and side panels.
FABRIC PERFORMANCE: Hybrid mapped construction, wind-resistant, breathable, lightweight
FUNCTIONAL DETAILS: Single-separating center front zipper, elastic drawcord hem, raglan sleeves
DESIGN FEATURES: Stand-up collar, adjustable drawcord hood, zip chest pocket, zip hand pockets
Our favourite features: softly-lined pockets, easily adjustable hood and stretch on the side panels for easy movement and added breathability.
The Vindo comes in charcoal, earth and indigo in sizes small to extra large. CDN/US $175
Women’s Oberland Hoody
The stylish Oberland Hoody is water-resistant and breathable, designed using a combination of Ventia™ 3L nylon and polyester twill face.
The two front pockets have zippers with faux snaps to match the main front zipper and functional snaps down the jacket.
The detachable drawstring hood is great for windy days, spacious enough to wear a toque underneath. The vintage-inspired Oberland has a 100% polyester fleece lining for cozy warmth. Mine’s in a charcoal colour that pairs nicely with bright colours.
FABRIC PERFORMANCE: Water, abrasion and wind-resistant, laminated construction
FUNCTIONAL DETAILS: Double-separating center front zipper, snap center front stormflap
DESIGN FEATURES: Removable hood, adjustable drawcord hood, zip hand pockets, contrast stitching, shoulder patches
The women’s Oberland Hoody is available in Charcoal and Earth (there’s a men’s version too). CDN $250/US $225
