Munich’s LOUIS Hotel is a lovely boutique property located in the historic heart of Munich, right across from the Viktualienmarkt, a former farmers’ market turned epicurean delight, in operation since 1807.
Part of the ATLANTIC hotels brand (and a Design Hotels member), The LOUIS opened its doors in September 2009, after two years of remodelling by Munich-based architects Hild und K, who worked to maintain the over 100-year-old building’s charm and structural integrity.
The hotel’s 72 stylish rooms are located on five floors. Its entrance is on ground level, with reception one floor up.
French balconies overlook either the market and surrounding Baroque style buildings or the inner courtyard and St. Peter’s Church. Our Market View Deluxe room also happens to overlook a key landmark of the Viktualienmarkt: The Munich Maypole, which has enjoyed the generous support of the city’s six renowned breweries for the past 55 years.
There are six different groups of figures on the maypole that represent the Munich way of life — an important cultural symbol of the city.
Rooms
Our Market View Deluxe room contains natural, handcrafted furnishings crafted from walnut and oak.
French brand La Biosthétique amenities can be found in the granite and white-tiled bathroom, complimented by wall-mounted lighting and metal accents.
Hung on one of the hallway hooks is a sturdy market bag ready to fill with goods from the Viktualienmarkt just outside the hotel door.
The room’s warmth is derived from treated wood floors, area rugs, soft lighting, and small benches and chairs spread around the space, for lounging or relaxing with a book. There’s a wooden work desk with a leather pull that opens to reveal hotel stationery and a city map.
A fabric-covered armoire resembling an old fashioned trunk is the room’s centrepiece, containing a TV and free minibar (stocked with juices, water, soft drinks and beer), with a safe and water kettle stowed in a separate section below.
We love a good stretch in the morning and tucked into the closet is a Lululemon yoga mat, ideal for getting the day going, especially after a long day of travel!
Pair your phone or tablet with the room’s Bose Mini Soundbar for listening to your fave tunes or podcasts while here. We noticed a lack of USB outlets for charging tech, but plenty of outlets overall, so make sure to pack a few standard European adapters if you’re travelling from outside the continent.
Dining
The lobby space contains several seating areas, The LOUIS Sparkling Bar, plus the breakfast room, where daily à la carte breakfast is served that includes a basket of fresh croissants and bread rolls, specialty sandwiches, homemade muesli, and breakfast classics, prepared using high-quality organic ingredients and regional products (EUR 35 per person).
The LOUIS Grillroom offers meat, fish, and vegetarian options, with locally-sourced ingredients and seasonal delicacies. The Roof Terrace is open when the weather cooperates and is a lovely spot for a cocktail or a dish from the Grill menu. In addition, two full-equipped onsite meeting rooms are available, also with views of either the Rindermarket or inner courtyard, depending on your preference.
