Jim Byrnes

Coming next month will be a rare chance to see two of Canada’s finest recording artists, Jim Byrnes and Babe Gurr, perform their songs in an intimate setting. A special fundraising concert is set for January 31 and February 1 at the North Shore’s Deep Cove Shaw Theatre. The last four shows sold out quickly. 2014’s concert will again benefit the First Impressions Theatre.

Jim Byrnes was involved with fundraising to get the theatre built and has continued to provide his support by headlining concerts at the theatre over the past 20 years. Babe Gurr has lent her talents to the fundraising concerts as well throughout the years and enjoys performing at this both intimate and welcoming venue.

Born in St. Louis, Missouri (aka blues country), if anyone can sing the blues, it’s Jim Byrnes. He is one of Vancouver’s most popular musicians, as well as one of Canada’s best-known actors (noted for his starring roles in the series “Highlander“, “Wise Guy“, and his own variety show “The Jim Byrnes Show”). Jim is a singer solidly rooted in the traditions of blues and R&B.

In 2012, Jim recorded “I Hear The Wind in The Wires”, an album of songs from the golden age of country music – many of which he’s been listening to for all his life. Steve Dawson is back in the saddle again as producer and multi-instrumentalist (electric, acoustic, slide, pedal steel and baritone guitar, banjo, ukulele). To hear these two men celebrate the music of Buck Owens, Ray Price, Hank Williams, Marty Robbins and other country music legends is a rare and exhilarating experience.

Babe Gurr has been turning heads for years with her blend of roots/blues/world sound. Her warm and sultry voice, intelligent lyrics, and memorable melodies make her an audience favourite. Babe’s much anticipated album, “SideDish” takes this artist in a new direction, exploring world music fused with her own unique roots style and writing. Italian, Spanish, Middle-Eastern, Brazilian and New Orleans influences form the backdrop of the musical landscape of her new release.

Babe’s songwriting has recently won the Sonic Bids Nashville Song Contest, garnering honourable mention for three self-penned tunes in the acclaimed Billboard World Song Contest, and was selected as a finalist for two tunes in the 12th Great American Song Contest.

Babe has headlined at numerous festivals across Canada, performing in some of the most popular and prestigious concert halls spanning from Vancouver Island to the Maritimes as well as U.S. dates in New York and Seattle.
