Peter Chu

Dances for a Small Stage will present two installations of its contemporary performance series this August at The Legion on the Drive.

On August 1 and 2, Dances for a Small Stage 26 highlights internationally renowned choreographer Peter Chu and his critically acclaimed company. On August 3 and 4, the 27th installment presents some of Vancouver’s hottest young artists in daring new works on the signature, ridiculously small 10-by-13-foot stage.

“I’ve always been of the mindset that you can never have too much of a good thing,” says MovEnt Artistic Producer Julie-anne Saroyan. “So when the opportunity arose to have Peter Chu, an unbelievable artist, come to Vancouver with his insanely talented company coupled with a stellar mix of Ballet BC dancers performing during their summer hiatus – I couldn’t possibly pick just one. The result is going to be more talent than we’ve ever seen on our tiny stage.”

In Dances for a Small Stage, Peter Chu and his Las Vegas-based company, Chuthis, will present their wildly popular show, Nothing Sticks.

Chu is a remarkable and multi-faceted artist; as a performer he has danced with BJM Danse, as the lead in Christina Perri’s Jar of Hearts music video, in Celine Dion’s Vegas spectacular A New Day, and can currently be seen with Crystal Pite’s Kidd Pivot.

As a choreographer he has created for Naomi Stikeman’s Çaturn (consulted by Robert Lepage), the Houston Metropolitan Contemporary Dance Company, and the San Diego Dance Company, amongst others. He is also the recipient of the prestigious 2010 Capezio A.C.E. Award for Choreography

Nothing Sticks is a fascinating evening of dance that uses wit, humour, sophisticated video projections, and the spectacularly talented Chuthis dancers to explore our relationship with time. Dressed in anachronistic garb and bearing umbrellas, the company delivers an athletic, evocative series of solos, duets, and ensemble dances that culminate in a single statement: nothing in this world is permanent; everything is in flux.

Dances for a Small Stage 27 welcomes an array of returning favourites and newcomers from Vancouver’s booming dance community to create out-of-the-box and daring new works for the ridiculously small stage. Inspired by 1920’s elements, each choreographer will create new works around a Vaudeville theme.

An innovative pre-show performance by Hip Hop artist Kim Sato and her Project Soul Dance Crew will take place when the doors open at 7 pm.

Historically, tickets have only been available at the door, with regular line-ups down Commercial Drive. During the intermission for Dances for a Small Stage 26, individuals will have the opportunity to purchase their Dances for a Small Stage 27 tickets in advance, ensuring patrons get ahead of the line for the next evening’s performance.
