This month, Etsy Canada celebrates a decade of selling unique finds online. We share a decade-long milestone with Etsy: 10 years ago on June 16, my husband and I entered Canada for the first time as permanent residents, after having fallen in love with Vancouver on two prior visits.

10 years has flown by! We often use Etsy when shopping for gifts. The never-ending variety of goods at all price levels is what’s kept Etsy top of mind for many online shoppers.

I asked Jennifer Knox, Etsy Canada’s PR and Communications Manager, a few questions about Etsy’s history and favourite trends.

1. What inspires you most about working with Etsy?

Everyday is something new working at Etsy. As a small, nimble team the EtsyCA group is a force to be reckoned with. Twice a week we sit down for an “Eatsy” lunch together, oftentimes with partners or a seller will join us. As well, meeting the incredible Etsy Sellers across the country is inspiring and while it sure doesn’t help my savings account, buying from local artisans makes me so happy. And my jewelry collection is amazing. So…

2. In the past 10 years, have there been any must-have items or trends that sparked an online Etsy shopping frenzy?

Personally I think cats are always in style. 😉 and it’s always one of the top items purchased by Canadians, so it appears I’m in good company. Other trends include personalized items (especially for baby gifts and weddings) are consistently some of the most popular Etsy items. I also think “affordable” art is something that makes Etsy really cool.

3. What’s the most unique Etsy item you’ve come across to date?

Last year we did a cool fashion shoot with Canadian influencers who had a distinct fashion style. For the Beckerman Twins we brought in an amazing ‘pizza pillow’ hand-knit by a US seller. It was perfect: it had pepperoni, mushrooms, and green peppers as toppings. I ended up buying it afterwards for a friend who is obsessed with pizza. He loved it.

Some Etsy trivia: The first item sold on Etsy Canada was a chirpy bird wallet (June 27, 2005) while the first item bought on Etsy Canada was a black sheep painting on wood (June 20, 2005).
