We hadn’t been to Ucluelet in about four years and recall having seen Black Rock Oceanfront Resort nearly open for business as we lodged at a nearby B&B back then.
Fast-forward four years later, and the resort is fully operational, filled with beautiful local artwork and a gorgeous interior complete with designer furnishings and a commanding view of the sea.
My husband was lucky enough to have won a two night stay here. We added a third night, as getting to the coast involves the better part of the day to reach by ferry and drive across the island on the beautiful Pacific Rim Highway.
We checked into our one bedroom suite surrounded by pools, sea and forest.
The resort connects to part of the Wild Pacific Trail in the middle of a rainforest. We enjoyed a few walks here after our breakfasts.
Floor-to-ceiling windows allow full views of nature, no matter what part of the resort you’re staying in. At once we felt at peace amongst the old growth trees, all accessible via our deck.
The kitchen has high-quality Miele appliances and is fully stocked with a dishwasher, convection microwave, cooktop, cutlery, pots and pans, and a fridge. Fair trade coffee can be prepared either with a coffee maker or Bodum french press (our preferred way of enjoying coffee), both there for guest use.
Bottles of Prospect Winery varietals are available for sale ($22/bottle). We noticed a different selection each day.
Free bikes, helmets, and locks are available with a deposit. Complimentary wifi in our room was speedy, and much appreciated as Rogers coverage is spotty around much of Ucluelet and Tofino. We noticed that wifi wasn’t available outside the room though.
The huge, modern bathroom is one of the room’s showpieces, with a beautiful white soaker tub perched on a black tile platform with two frosted glass windows that open out to the ocean. The floor tiles are heated and the stone-tiled two person shower has both a small removable/adjustable shower head and a rain shower.
We found two storage closets, one containing a safe large enough for a laptop. Both the living room and bedroom have flat screen TVs with a variety of channels.
Windows open to bring in the fresh sea air, and at night, the waves caress the rocks, gently lulling us to sleep.
A fitness center downstairs leads to a plunge pool and two hot tubs, all with ocean views.
The pressures of the past week gave way to several great sessions of lounging in the living room and looking out at the rocks and sea.
With a romantic atmosphere such as this, there really isn’t any need to hurry anywhere. As a bonus, we spotted whales from our deck at the end of each day!
Black Rock’s staff is outgoing and helpful. The resort is both kid and pet friendly (a pet accommodation fee applies). Additional amenities include a guest concierge service, reading lounge with internet stations and board games, an electric vehicle charging station and off-site laundry service. Guest parking is free.
Tip: stay on the top (4th floor) if possible. The floors could use better insulation from noise.
Fetch offers gourmet dining with incredible ocean views inside and out. We enjoyed a delicious dinner at Fetch to celebrate our anniversary. The small menu includes Oceanwise seafood and the dishes are West coast-inspired.
The restaurant’s name is derived from an oceanographic term that refers to the distance a constant wine blows across a body of water without interruption of the generation of wave. The longer the fetch length or distance, the higher the wave.
Nearby Float Lounge is a relaxed space to mingle with a cocktail and lighter fare. Live music was on the schedule for a couple of the nights we were there.
Get pampered at Drift Spa with nutrient-rich “Sea Flora“, Vancouver Island-made organic seaweed products used at Black Rock’s in-house spa. Custom facials, mani/pedis, west coast hot stone massage and other treatments are available by appointment.
Black Rock Oceanfront Resort is located at 596 Marine Drive in Ucluelet, BC.
