Getting ready to hit the road? Or just researching possibilities? We’re gearing up for more travel next month in Eastern Europe (can’t wait!) and discovered a cool app for finding spots that locals recommend.
Like a Local is the brainchild of seasoned world traveller Kalev Külasse and travelpreneur Ülane Vilumets.
[Like a Local founders Kalev and Ülane kicking it old-school with paper maps]
They teamed up to change the face of travel — one city at a time.
Currently available on web and iPhone (Android is in the works), Like a Local lets you ditch the guidebooks and curate your own list of cafés, restaurants, bars, clubs, shops, sights, galleries and green spaces in over 300 cities around the globe.
Each city in the list contains a colourful photo background showing number of tips, tours and locals who’ve added those tips.
A handy interactive map shows what’s open and available nearby.
Content is created by locals, so you’re sure to learn about some of the hidden gems before you arrive. A new private messaging feature has just been added to put you directly in touch with locals.
Who knows? Maybe you’ll wind up meeting a local while you discover a new city or two.
Launched in 2013, Like a Local is a free download. If you’d like to use the app off-line, it costs USD $1.99 (CAD $2.79) to ‘buy’ a city (map included), a great bargain if you don’t intend to buy a data plan or SIM card on your travels.
