Hyper Combo IPA poster

Dead Frog Brewery’s just released its first collaboration beer, Hyper Combo Red Rye IPA, together with Fuggles & Warlock Craftworks. In case you’re not familiar with Fuggles & Warlock, the Richmond-based craft brewery is into its third year of brewing ‘adventurous beers for craft beer lovers’. Upcoming releases will include Shiva Session White IPA and Destiny IPA.

Their Bean Me Up Espresso Milk Stout won an award at last year’s BC Beer Awards — in the vegetable/spice category. Keeping beer weird is their motto. No doubt!

Dead Frog plans to continue producing more collaboration craft beers in the future, so we can look forward to equally-cheeky names as well as unique flavour combinations.

Dead Frog and Fuggles & Warlock’s Collaboration Hyper Combo Red Rye IPA

Hyper Combo is named after a fighting video game parody. The Aldergrove, BC brewery explains it as follows: A “combo” is a combination attack involving a string of sequential normal attacks. A “hyper combo” is a more powerful special move consisting of a chain of combos.

“I wanted to make a beer that was malty, yet balanced; strong, but deceivingly so,” according to Dan “Fuggles” Colyer of Fuggles & Warlock. “Dry-hopping with Citra, Amarillo, and Galaxy gave a burst of citrus aroma that balanced the aggressive bittering very well.”

This robust, dark amber ale has a nice colour and contains citrus and honey aromas. We also dig the lemon infusion that continues through to tropical fruit (we tasted mango) for a dry finish.

Hyper Combo Red Rye uses 2-Row, Munich, Rye Malt, Carapils, Crystal 80, Crystal 40, Crystal 20 and Midnight Wheat malts, with Citra, Amarillo, and Galaxy hops, bringing the IBU to 70 in this hearty 8% ABV IPA.

This brew’s now available in 650ml bottles for $6.99, in select pubs and restaurants and at BC Liquor stores.
