Lowepro Scout 140

For over 40 years, professionals and amateurs alike have turned to Lowepro for options to protect and carry a variety of gear. I was recently sent the Scout SH-140, a bag specially designed to fit smaller mirrorless cameras.

Photography is not a hobby of mine but luckily I have plenty of photographer friends. My buddy Christopher Trieu took the Scout SH-140 out on one of his weekend photo shoots, providing the following feedback and images for this review.

On first impression, the Scout SH-140 has a very classic look – dual metallic snaps and a stylish denim canvas exterior shell. Made of 600 Denier spun polyester, the combination of different yarns gives the bag a crisp canvas feel but offers the durability and protection of a synthetic.

The bag features a soft grab handle and a removable, comfortable padded shoulder strap.

Inside, your gear is protected with generous padding made from scratch-free, quilted tricot. Interior dividers are adjustable to accommodate a mirrorless or compact camera and up to two more lenses. I use a Nikon D7000 DSLR which fits snuggly into the bag with one extra lens.

Back

If you own a true mirrorless such as the Olympus OM-D E-M10 II or Sony A7 II, the camera body plus two lenses would nestle cozily.

An additional padded sleeve made to fit a mini tablet or a smartphone and a built-in key fob are added bonuses. Pockets on the back and the front offer room to store small extras such as memory cards, charging cords, instructions to your next photo shoot, etc.

Test Drive

The SH-140 is feature-packed and looks great with only a couple of minor drawbacks. The clamps are cumbersome to undo and the overhanging lid impedes accessibility to the camera. The cover becomes an annoyance when repeatedly taking equipment in and out of the bag during a shoot. A single clasp or zipper access would be preferable.

The Lowepro SH-140 is a great option for the casual photographer out on a day trip. Durable and lightweight, a lot of thoughtful design has gone into this bag. However, its compact size and awkward lid may limit the SH-140 from long day-into-night shoots, requiring extra accessories.

The Lowepro SH-140 retails for $79.95 online or via your favourite London Drugs, Staples or The Source stores.
