Klorane

If you’re looking to strengthen and add a boost of vitality to your hair from season to season, French beauty brand Klorane has just revamped its Medicinal Quinine fortifying haircare serum formula. If you think that chronic stress only affects your mood and sleep cycle, think again: Stress has now been identified as a leading hair loss cause.

We were sent a bottle of their newly-launched serum to try at home and are giving it a good amount of time to test its efficacy. While I have a full and rather thick head of hair, I do find strands each day on the bathroom floor. My partner has thinning hair, so he’ll give it a go as well (we’ll report back in a few weeks with an update here, so stay tuned).

Klorane combines the bark of medicinal Cinchona (a tree native to South America, rich in Quinine, and renowned for prolonging the hair’s life cycle) with caffeine to help stimulate keratin while strengthening your hair’s roots.

Added to this are Camu-Camu extract and Biotin. Camu-Camu is a a super-fruit with a high Vitamin C concentration that also happens to contain both antioxidant and anti-stress properties. Biotin activates microcirculation for better scalp oxygenation.

Together, this formula promises a 67% percent reduction in hair loss, with visible results including stronger, healthier hair when used three times a week (one 100 ml/3.3 fl. oz. bottle contains enough for a three-month course).

UPDATE
Klorane’s shampoo has been a great experience for me, and my husband has been feeling a slightly more luxurious head of hair. As for the conditioner, I have tried various conditioners over the years, and each time I do, my hair feels heavy and built-up over a couple of uses. Unfortunately, I’ve stopped using Klorane’s conditioner as well for this reason.

Usage

Pump 10 sprays onto a dry or wet scalp and massage in with your fingertips. It’s a leave-in serum that leaves no residue or greasy finish once applied.

Environmental Practices

The cultivation of Cinchona, from which Quinine is derived, does not endanger the Amazon rainforest since the bark is only harvested from mature trees over five years old.

Klorane Botanical Foundation has chosen to take action in Ecuador (where the primary forest is under threat) by promoting responsible agroforestry. This translates to training 150 farming families in nursery management, organic techniques, planting, crop maintenance and improvement, as well as developing future sustainable sources of income from local medicinal plants. Young children are also taught environmental concerns and sustainable practices.

Klorane’s new Intense Fortifying Serum is available in Shoppers Drug Mart stores for CAD $64.50/USD $32.

Klorane also produces Quinine shampoo (400 ml/13.5 fl. oz. bottle; CAD $18.20/USD $24) and fortifying conditioner (200 ml/6.7 fl. oz. tube; CAD $24.50/USD $24). Both shampoo and conditioner are gentle to use, contain a nice woody fragrance, help to strengthen the hair, stimulate growth, and reduce hair breakage. All products are made in France.
