The 2013 Vancouver Tweed Ride returns this year on Sunday, September 15. This group ride features cyclists dressed in traditional British cycling attire, namely tweed. Any bicycle is acceptable on the Tweed Ride, but classic vintage bicycles are encouraged. The ride will begin at The Vancouver Club, host sponsor for the event.

The route will follow the bike lanes and along the seawall around the downtown core. Stops will include C Restaurant for high tea and refreshments and a British style after-party courtesy of both The Terminal City Club and The Lions Pub.

Registration includes a rider kit, morning and midway-point refreshments, and entrance to the after-party. As well, Reckless Bike shop, official bike sponsor of the Vancouver Tweed Ride, will be onsite for maintenance from start to finish.

Tweed rides are a worldwide phenomenon started in London in the fall of 2009 as “Tweed Run London”. The popular event has been known to sell out in minutes with celebrity participants and hundreds of cyclists in attendance. Similar rides have taken place around the world including Toronto, New York, and Sydney.

“We are extremely grateful to be the non-profit of choice for the first annual organized Tweed Ride” says Christopher Hindle, a Director of Intersections Media Opportunities for Youth Society. “The proceeds from the ride will ensure that Intersections can continue to provide valuable programs for at-risk youth in the Lower Mainland.”

Prizes will be awarded following the event for Best Individual Tweed, Best Bicycle, and Best Group Tweed.

Organizers hope to recreate the spirit of a bygone era, promote urban biking, and raise money and awareness for a local non-profit. This year’s chosen charity is Intersections Media Opportunities for Youth Society, offering development programs for at-risk youth in the Lower Mainland who face multiple barriers to employment.
