Airplane birthday notes

I was recently headed down to the US aboard a United Airlines flight to San Antonio. Skies were clear and conditions were smooth. I was absorbed in a good read when I spotted one of the passengers a few rows ahead of me chatting with fellow travellers as she passed around some packaged notes.

The woman had typewritten a message enclosed in packs that included a photo of her mother (Joan), decorations for each birthday card, and a call to action: Please find it in your heart to fill out the card, decorate it, and hand it to her when you see her smiling face at the bottom of the escalator (en route to baggage claim).

Joan’s mother had passed away just before Mother’s Day. Her father passed away that same year when Joan was 10. The intention of this message of love was to help her mother heal, and to hopefully release some unsettled childhood trauma.

I did have a chance to write a message inside the card, meet the mother, and in return, I received a thank you and a smile. My mission for the day was complete.

As I recently lost my own mother, the events surrounding the card and its intent have come full circle for me. For all those celebrating Mom this weekend, make sure to acknowledge her on her special day, and keep a birthday reminder on your calendar!

Happy Mother’s Day ❤️
