Prototypes is a design exhibition that delves into the role prototyping plays in developing a product design as well as the built environment. The first event of its kind in North America is coming to Vancouver from September 24 through October 1, 2011. This unique exhibition will be housed at Burnkit’s studio, located in the Downtown Eastside, home to a number of participants as well as other designers and builders with a keen interest in this exhibition.

Opening night (Saturday, September 24, 7-11 pm) will give the public a chance to meet the artists behind the work. During the exhibit’s run, you’ll be able to view physical prototypes and learn the background behind each piece.

“I think it’s exciting that Burnkit is interested in the idea of prototypes and asked me to join the show”, said Niels Bendtsen of Bensen Manufacturing. “Although people may be aware of prototyping as a way to try out new ideas they often forget, or aren’t aware of, the industrial aspect of industrial design. Perhaps what is most interesting apart from working out how a new piece is going to look and function, prototyping is essential to resolving the huge number of hidden details and problems in order to be ready for mass production. To me these details are often as fascinating and beautiful as the finished product itself.”

According to Burnkit’s Josh Dunford, “we’re excited to bring this type of hands-on look to Vancouver design enthusiasts, industry insiders, press and students of design. This is something that we are extremely passionate about. It’s part of our everyday lives as a design studio, and are thrilled to share that experience with others”.
