Get ready for a morning of creativity with your coffee and breakfast. Creative Mornings Vancouver, a free monthly lecture series for creatives, happens on Friday, September 2, at W2’s Media Café.
Creative Mornings began in 2009 in New York City. Since then, it’s since expanded to cities around the world, attracting top creative professionals for free breakfast, coffee, and inspiration from some of the world’s top creative thinkers.
Vancouver will be joining New York City, Zurich, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, London and Berlin. Stockholm, Boston, Milan and Auckland will soon launch their own event as well.
The format is the same in every city, for every event: 20-minute talk, 20-minute Q&A, 20-minute mingler. Breakfast and coffee are always complimentary. You’ll be out by 10 am, hopefully inspired and ready to hit your day’s projects (or at least get you thinking about them). For its first breakfast, the Vancouver chapter will host Stewart Butterfield, co-founder of Flickr (as well as other ventures).
A bit about Stewart Butterfield, featured speaker:
Butterfield grew Flickr from a tiny Canadian operation to a worldwide phenomenon. As “The Eyes of the World,” Flickr boasts over 85 million users a month, and is the largest repository of publicly available photographs, with over 5 billion pictures, and over 2.5 million new photos uploaded every day. In 2005, Butterfield sold Flickr to Yahoo!, where he continued to work, before leaving in 2008 to pursue his next project – entering the growing world of massively multiplayer online gaming.
Butterfield is the co-founder of the gaming startup Tiny Speck, whose debut title is a multiplayer online game called Glitch. Glitch hopes to revolutionize online gaming the same way Flickr revolutionized online photo sharing. Butterfield has been nominated for the Chrysler Design Award, has been named a Best Leader by Business Week, and is one MIT’s Top 35 Innovators Under 35. He also founded the 5k Awards, a competition highlighting the best use of simple design solutions.
Registration can be found on Eventbrite. The event is being sponsored by Langara College, with September’s event co-hosted by W2 Media Café and the BC Chapter of the Society of Graphic Designers of Canada. Only 150 seats are available, and this event will sell out quickly. Mark Monday, August 29 (11 am) on your calendar for registration, and September 2, 8:30 – 10 am for what will certainly become Vancouver’s hot morning event ticket for creatives. The idea is to get everyone on their way by 10, feeling inspired and ready to hit the creative ground running.
