CAN vs JPN-117

It’s been on my bucket list for years — we’re finally headed to JAPAN! I took this fan photo during the 2010 Vancouver Paralympic Games before the start of a Canada vs. Japan sledge hockey match.

I’m sure I’m not the only Vancouverite (or Tofitian) who’s dreamily gazed out at sea, knowing that somewhere in the very, very far distance lies Japan. It’ll be amazing to unearth a fabulous mix of cultures, architecture, fashion and history during our upcoming trip this week.

This past month has been a whirlwind of emails and research as we acquaint ourselves with the train and metro systems as well as a few choice spots to explore. We’re also trying to avoid packing the itinerary too tightly.

We’ll start and end our trip in Tokyo and travel on the shinkansen to Kyoto, Osaka and points in between.

Bill Murray in Lost in Translation

It was hard to narrow down our destinations — there’s so much to do in every corner of the country. We’ve re-watched Lost in Translation, a great film by Sophia Coppola in which Bill Murray deals with cultural barriers while in Tokyo shooting a Suntory ad.

So as we visit temples, shrines, Harajuku and crazy Shibuya crossing – and eat our way through the food stalls of Kyoto and Tokyo’s famed Tsukiji fish market (sushi!) – we hope to return with some great memories of Japan — in all its forms!

You can follow our travels on Twitter, Instagram as well as on Snapchat (Vancouverscape). We’ve purchased pocket wifi (thanks Candie Tanaka for the tip!) and should be good to go for staying connected.
