Mio SLICE heart rate tracker

We recently received a sleek-designed Mio SLICE, the first fitness tracker from Mio offering a heart rate monitoring metric called PAI: Personal Activity Intelligence.

PAI is a revolutionary new system that turns your heart rate data into a single, personal score, showing how much activity you need to stay healthy. Everyone’s goal is the same, to keep the PAI score above 100 over a one-week window of time in order to maintain optimal health.

Rather than just keeping up on your steps, the USB-chargeable Mio SLICE will actually show you Beats Per Minute (BPM), calories burned, time elapsed during the activity, sleep data, current time and a personal score (shown as PAI points).

Your body’s heart rate is the most accurate measure of your response to physical activity, which is why Mio created SLICE to offer 24/7 EKG- (electrocardiogram) level quality heart rate: accurate, real-time heart data with EKG as a reference.

And it's waterproof

The comfortable, adjustable band (shaped to curve around the wrist) with a pin-style clasp comes in two sizes: small and large. We received a large for my husband to test drive and so far, he’s finding the Slice offers a good range of options (set up via free, downloadable iOS and Android-compatible smart phone apps).

Out of the box, there’s the Slice tracker, a USB charging cable, quick-start guide and warranty info. The USB charger attaches to the back of the tracker magnetically via two metal pins.

Charging time varies from 40 minutes to two hours (for a full charge). A charge lasts as long as the amount of options you have turned on. In other words, if you turn off a couple of options and lower the brightness of the screen, you’ll gain an extra day or so between charges.

Ours needs charging about every third day (all options turned on with decreased screen brightness).

A single button on the front allows you to scroll to the menus. A cool feature we like is having the SLICE vibrate when your smart phone is ringing elsewhere in the office or home.

The SLICE will store heart rate data at one-second intervals during exercise, every five minutes below moderate activity and every 15 minutes during sleep.

To record an activity, you put SLICE into Workout Mode by pressing down the button for two seconds. SLICE then displays “GO!” and starts the chronograph timer.

During Workout Mode, SLICE uses high-intensity sampling rate, capturing your heart rate every second. Ending an activity session is just as easy: press the button for two seconds. This will exit Workout Mode and return to All-Day Mode.

Once your workout’s through, viewing the app shows your actual BMP rate during that activity.

Wearing the SLICE at bedtime will analyze sleep quality, showing start and stop time, deep or light sleep and awake time, indicated by a series of coloured bars in the app.

PAI points are calculated based on your heart rate data and personal profile. To earn more PAI points, increase the intensity of your activity to get your heart rate up. At the end of the day, your PAI score and PAI Points Earned Today can be seen on both the Mio SLICE and via the Mio PAI app.
