Save the date! 30 years of Fringing in Vancouver will commence at the newly revamped Opening Night Fundraiser on September 2. Mingle with Fringe artist alumni during the VIP reception, catch one of the Fringe’s best-known artists, TJ Dawe, in the Vancouver premier of Marathon, and party the night away with Seattle-based bluegrass rockers, The Cave Singers, at this special Fringe birthday party.

“Turning 30 is a big deal,” Fringe Executive Director David Jordan explains. “You start to evaluate what’s important. And at the Fringe, it’s no different. The best nights at the Festival are those where you get to see an amazing theatre performance with your friends, and then go to the Fringe Bar to see a great band. We want to celebrate those great nights of Fringing by reflecting them at Opening Night on a bigger scale.”

The Vancouver premiere of TJ Dawe’s Marathon will form part of 2014’s Fringe Opening Night.

Self-reflection is one of TJ Dawe’s strong suits and Marathon continues in this vein. In his 14th one-man show as writer and performer, Dawe tells us about running track and field to please his high-school-principal-dad—and failing miserably. In true TJ Dawe style, he relates this to psychology, and ultimately, his current state of being.

“Dawe is a master storyteller, but more importantly he is a weaver … you don’t want to miss a bit of it.” — Orlando Weekly

There’ll be a pre-show reception with hors d’oeuvres, treats, and beverages courtesy of Fringe sponsors Dockside Restaurant, The Keg, Camino, McAuslan Brewing, Barefoot Wine and Bubbly, and Liberty Distillery.

Catch The Cave Singers at the Fringe’s Opening Night ahead of their East coast tour this fall.

“A bluesy moshpit broke out … and the final crescendo of stomping good times built up around the venue and dissipated into applause … If The Cave Singers come back into town any time soon, make them part of your night out. You’ll have the perfect evening.” – Dallas Observer

The 30th Vancouver Fringe Festival is set for September 4 to 14, and includes free performances from local bands and DJs every night on the Barefoot Wine & Bubbly Stage at the St. Ambroise Fringe Bar (located at the AGRO Café on Granville Island).
