Do The Right Thing

Each month, Melanie Friesen invites a distinguished guest to Vancity Theatre’s Cinema Salon, in order to present his/her favourite film. After the screening, both audience and speaker have the opportunity to engage over drinks and snacks in the Vancity lounge. This month’s film is Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing.

Just the film for a Vancouver winter’s evening, Do the Right Thing takes place in the tension-filled streets of Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant, and covers 24 hours of it on the hottest day of the year. This is the film that put Spike Lee on the map – writing, directing, producing, and starring in a film about race in the US in a neighborhood where Italians serve pizza, Koreans sell vegetables but blacks do all the buying.

In a gangbuster fusion of politics, drama and community comedy, every character is presented sympathetically and in full dimension. Roger Ebert has called Do the Right Thing the “most discussed” and “most important” film of 1989. And it damn well was.

“Mr. Lee’s movie is anything but minimalist. It is bursting with character, color, incident and music, including a militant rap number performed by Public Enemy.” — Vincent Canby, New York Times

Alessandro Juliani This month’s Cinema Salon is hosted by actor, singer, sound designer and composer Alessandro Juliani. Having once commanded the Battlestar Galactica for nearly 27 minutes, you may have recently seen him on-screen in locally-shot Man of Steel, Motive, Continuum, Almost Human, and The Hundred, or on stage in Mary’s Wedding (ATP), All The Way Home (Electric Company), Falstaff and Henry V (Bard on the Beach).

Juliani’s soundscapes and original music have contributed to recent productions of Trifles (Shaw Festival), King Lear (National Arts Centre), Master Class and The Penelopiad (Arts Club Theatre), Vigil (American Conservatory Theatre, Los Angeles), Kidd Pivot’s Tempest Replica, and Ann Marie Fleming’s animated short, Big Trees. He’s also married to well-loved actress Meg Roe.
