Jack Nicholson in One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest

Each month, Melanie Friesen invites a distinguished guest to Vancity Theatre’s Cinema Salon, in order to present his/her favourite film. After the screening, both audience and speaker have the opportunity to engage over drinks and snacks in the Vancity lounge. This month’s film is Milos Forman’s 1975 film One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.

Jack Nicholson plays McMurphy as if he were born to it, and the supporting cast provides fine, detailed performances.” — Dave Kehr, Chicago Reader

Considered one of the greatest American films, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest swept the top five major Academy Awards of 1975. Based on the 1962 novel of the same name by Ken Kesey and set in a mental institution, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest deals with a very 1970’s issue: individual versus establishment.

In two towering performances, the battle of the wills is fought by minor criminal Murphy (Jack Nicholson) and domineering Nurse Ratched (Louise Fletcher), the cold and efficient matron of McMurphy’s ward. It’s a world of hammer and tongs, including those quintessential Nicholson grins.
