The Vancouver Cantata Singers have announced their 2013-2014 season of concerts, the first under leadership of new Artistic Director, Paula Kremer. Ms. Kremer’s unique creativity, visionary instincts, and musical integrity will inspire all of the choir’s endeavours. According to Kremer, “The Vancouver Cantata Singers has a dual tradition of quality and exploration, which makes our way forward both clear, and clearly exciting.”

Tickets for the 2013-2014 concert season may be purchased individually, or as a discounted season subscription (except for the November 2 fundraising event). All tickets are available online or via phoning 604.730.8856.

Season Opening Concert: Fading Splendour | English Music from the End of Empire

Date: Saturday October 19, 8 pm

Venue: Christ Church Cathedral, 690 Burrard Street, Vancouver
Tickets: $30/$25 ($10 student rush seats at the door)
At its height, the British Empire was the largest empire in history. This concert will showcase music written during the final years of England’s faded glory. The concert will feature music by Howells, Wood, Stanford, Elgar, Vaughan Williams and others. The central work in the program is Vaughan Williams’ Mass in G Minor, written in 1921 and supremely English in style. This moving work was dedicated to Gustav Holst, whose music will also be featured in the concert.
 
Spinal Chord! | A partnership fundraiser with ICORD and Vancouver Cantata Singers
Date: Saturday, November 2, 7 pm

Venue: Blusson Spinal Cord Centre, 818 West 10th Ave, Vancouver
Tickets: $100 (with a tax receipt for $80 issued)
This unique fundraiser supports both the multi-award-winning Vancouver Cantata Singers and ICORD’s spinal cord injury research. The evening will feature great music, fine wine, catered hors d’oeuvres, and socializing. The award-winning atrium of the Blusson Spinal Cord Centre has a wrap-around ramp that winds above a central open space below, offering one of the most amazing choral acoustics you’re likely to hear in any venue.
 
Christmas Reprise XI | The VCS’ annual blockbuster Christmas Concert

Date: Saturday December 21, 2 pm
Venue: Holy Rosary Cathedral, 646 Richards Street, Vancouver
Tickets: $18
A treasured yuletide-season tradition for Vancouver and the Lower Mainland, the Vancouver Cantata Singers will again celebrate the holiday season with a matinée performance of A Christmas Reprise in the glorious Holy Rosary Cathedral. Christmas Reprise is a delight for audiences of all ages and backgrounds, and one that will conjure up a bit of old-fashioned holiday magic. Purchase tickets early to avoid disappointment; this concert regularly sells out.
 
Bridge of Song | Choral Music from Canada and the Baltic States
Date: Saturday March 1, 2014, 8 pm
Venue: to be announced at a later date

Tickets: $30/$25 ($10 student rush seats at the door)
The three Baltic States – Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia – have ancient choral traditions that still flourish today. Included in this program is the music of the Latvian-Canadian composer, Jānis Kalniņš, whose music is profoundly moving, extremely complex, and technically accomplished.
 
Voices of Vancouver | Choral Music by Vancouver Composers
Date: Saturday May 3, 2014, 8 pm
Venue: Orpheum Annex, 823 Seymour Street, 2nd floor, Vancouver
Tickets: $30/$25 ($10 student rush seats at the door)
