Kuhn Rikon’s Ratchet Spice Grinder

Last year, American chef, editor, publisher and radio/TV personality Christopher Kimball created a line of top-shelf cooking tools for Swiss culinary brand Kuhn Rikon.

Grinder and jars

Kimball is the man behind Milk Street, a Boston-based multimedia food prep organization that includes a cooking school as well as a website for video podcasts and live broadcasts.

Working models of Kuhn Rikon products were thoroughly tested in Milk Street’s kitchens before designs were finalized. We love preparing our own spice blends anytime of the year, but with the holidays rapidly approaching, we thought it would be a great time to check out Kimball’s ratchet spice grinder and matching set of spice jars!

We’ve become fans of Kuhn Rikon for their collection of colourful, high quality kitchen goods, including a ratchet grinder we picked up in San Francisco years back.

This type of grinder has to be our favourite in the house: it’s easy to use, ergonomically-friendly and the you can see just how much spice is left through the clear plastic window. And speaking of plastic, materials used in this grinder are all BPA-free.

The quality grinding stone is ceramic for durability (we’ve been using ours for over 10 years).

You simply move the handle back and forth. On the bottom is an adjustable dial with settings from coarse (counter-clockwise) to fine (clockwise) grind.

Hand washing and air drying is recommended as well as avoiding filling it with cloves or anise (they’ve been found to destroy plastic). USD $25

The matching set of four stackable, BPA-free spice jars are great for storing all those freshly-ground spices and blends. Each twist-off jar holds 3T/44.4 ML of spice; USD $20
