La Glace Ice Cream

This Friday, August 4, Vancouver’s ice cream renaissance will get a bit sweeter with the opening of romantic ice cream parlour La Glace.

Born three years ago as a charming ice cream cart for pop-ups and special events, La Glace has evolved into an elegant ice cream parlour and salon de thé serving ice cream and pastries meticulously handcrafted in the French method.

Located at West 16th Avenue and Macdonald, this adorable shop will offer decadent indulgence to Westside Vancouverites by way of sorbet, dairy and vegan ice cream (in cups and cones), as well as parfaits topped with seasonal local fruit and house-made marshmallows and meringues.

Pastry pairings will include regularly rotating flavours of cookies, macarons and profiteroles. Pastry chef Mark Tagulao, founder and culinary director of La Glace, has been scooping his handmade ice cream at some of the city’s most celebrated events since 2014, including Crème de la Crème, Holt Renfrew, Williams-Sonoma, The Granville Social and TED Talks.

“My goal has always been to put down roots at a forever home in Vancouver,” says Tagulao. “La Glace hasn’t even opened yet, and the neighbourhood has already embraced us. I’m wholeheartedly devoted to creating a sentimental gathering place for this community.”

‘All things are better when shared with someone cherished’ is La Glace’s guiding philosophy. This sentiment is at the core of every detail of the brand, packaging, signage, furniture and interior finishings designed by Arithmetic.

The shop’s art direction was rooted in a fascination with the transitional time between Art Nouveau and Art Deco wherein flowing curvatures migrated to geometric poetry. Brass and marble, a curved bar and mint colour all evoke nostalgia.

The custom banquette and hand-painted gold-leaf mural integrating Chinoiserie elements with La Glace’s mascots—a pair of peacocks—add a unique Paris-inspired elegance to this space.

Satisfy your sweet tooth at La Glace at 2785 West 16th Avenue. Opening hours will be Wednesday through Saturday, noon to 10 pm. Photos by Gillian Stevens.
