I’d been curious about BOGS’ colourful boot range for some time now. Their boots are purposefully designed to get wet while keeping your feet dry. Now that we’re in full winter mode, it was time to take a closer look at a pair of waterproof boots with warmth.
While perusing the BOGS website, the Classic Winter Plaid High boots seemed right up my alley. Oregon-based BOGS has been in the business of creating boots built to withstand harsh conditions since 2002.
Part of a collection including florals, solids, and plaids, the Classic Winter high boots are made of hand-lasted rubber with a four-way stretch inner bootie for warmth. They’re comfort rated to -40F/-40C, perfect for cold-climate treks.
BOGS are instantly recognizable for the handy side pull-on handles, that make them not only easy to take on and off but to carry around. I took my pretty plaid boots (these go so well with both denim and black jeans as well as skirts and tights) out for a walk near the beach and the first thing I noticed was how solidly built they are. These are not your typical wellies. They’re well insulated and cozy! The contoured EVA footbed can be removed to place your own orthotics in if needed.
I’ve since been wearing them with Icebreaker mid-weight wool socks, since I basically live in those all through the winter. It’ll be interesting to see how they fare in snow and ice. So far, they’ve been holding up really well, cold/wet protection-wise. I will update this post with my cold-weather BOGS experience, as the -40 temperature rating has made me all the more curious to test them in colder conditions.
The boots are easy to clean when mud gets on them, another plus when living on the wet coast. I envision heading off to Tofino later this winter for trail hikes. I’ve heard how popular they are on the farm, but I think these are pretty cool for city slickers too.

BOGS Classic Winter plaid boots retails for CDN $130 and are available in sizes 6-12. Since I’m typically a size 8 to 8 1/2, I found that I needed to go up a size larger with BOGS boots (at least in the classic tall boot style). The BOGS website offers free shipping and returns (excluding sale items).
