Imagine Van Gogh

Imagine Van Gogh, an exhibition already seen by hundreds of thousands of people in Europe and across Canada (Montreal, Quebec City and Winnipeg), is coming to the Vancouver Convention Centre this month!

Having lived in van Gogh’s birth country for eight years, and spending many afternoon inside Amsterdam’s van Gogh Museum, I cannot wait to see this fusing of art and tech on home turf.

Imagine Van Gogh

Imagine Van Gogh is the brainchild of Annabelle Mauger and Julien Baron, who collaborated on the creation of immersive shows at Cathédrale d’images in Les Baux-de-Provence, using the concept of “Image Totale”, conceived by Albert Plécy.

For this exhibit, they employed advanced multi-projection and immersive audio techniques to add emotional depth to each image, allowing the viewer to live and feel the creative energy of the esteemed artist.

The very concept of Imagine Van Gogh is grandiose: visitors wander amongst giant projections of the artist’s paintings, swept away by every brushstroke, detail, painting medium and colour. Visitors discover more than 200 of van Gogh’s paintings, including his most famous works, painted between 1888 and 1890 in Provence, Arles and Auvers-sur-Oise.

It was between Provence and l’Ile-de-France that the Dutch artist realized his most stunning work. The journey starts with a portrait of the artist, whose deep blue eyes seem to leap from the canvas as they stare back intensely at each visitor.

According to Mauger, “Original canvasses are expanded and fragmented, then projected into unusual shapes to emphasize the mesmerizing exaggerations and distortions of van Gogh’s work. Visitors experience their energy, emotion, and beauty like never before”.
