Silicon Valley cast

Take five programmer dudes with five vastly different personalities, put ‘em in front of a computer (or at a board meeting), and watch the antics fly as they aim to get their company off the ground in Northern California’s competitive start-up hotbed. I was invited to a Silicon Valley viewing party last night in honour of a first season that’s seen five Emmy Award nominations including Best Comedy Series and is about to start a second season on April 12.

Starring a talented ensemble of both up-and-coming and veteran actors, Silicon Valley charts the rising fortunes of Richard (Thomas Middleditch), an introverted computer programmer who lives in a “Hacker Hostel” start-up incubator along with his friends Big Head (Josh Brener), Gilfoyle (Martin Starr), Erlich (T.J. Miller) and Dinesh (Kumail Nanjiani).

When mid-level Hooli executive Jared (Zach Woods) discovers the value of the novel compression algorithm in a site Richard’s created, Richard finds himself caught in the middle of an extreme bidding war between Hooli founder Gavin Belson (Matt Ross) and independent billionaire venture capitalist Peter Gregory (Christopher Evan Welch).

We watched Richard, Big Head, Gilfoyle, Dinesh and Erlich battle it out at the Tech Crunch conference with the aim of having their data compression software score higher than that of rival tech start-up Nucleus. Our group also had the chance to see Season 2’s first episode ahead of the rest of Canada. Good things in store!

Co-created by Alec Berg (HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm®) and Mike Judge (Office Space), Silicon Valley is a spunky comedy series set in the high-tech gold rush of modern Silicon Valley, where the people most qualified to succeed are the least capable of handling success.

The San Francisco Chronicle hailed it as “one of the best new shows of the season”. Get ready for season two by picking up the entire first season on Blu-ray with Digital HD ($62.48) and DVD ($49.98). All eight episodes are also available on Digital HD.

Bonus content for Silicon Valley: The Complete First Season includes:
– Making Silicon Valley: A behind the scenes look at the making of Silicon Valley
– Tech Crunch: Disrupt: Learn how Silicon Valley created their own Tech Crunch: Disrupt! conference
– The Hacker Hostel: Take a tour through the Pied Piper headquarters
– 8 audio commentaries featuring Mike Judge, Alec Berg, T.J. Miller, and more
– Episode previews

I just discovered Silicon Valley last week and loved every minute of it – just wonder if 30 minute episodes on a short season arc do it justice though?

Season 2: time will tell methinks! Thanks, Chris; we’ve yet to watch the entire season (have the Blu-ray ready to go, once Mad Men is over).
