Winnipeg/Thermëa Nordik Spa

Relax, rejuvenate and pamper yourself at Thermëa by Nordik Spa-Nature, just a 20-minute drive from downtown Winnipeg.

This is the ultimate escape from a busy lifestyle. The spa is meant to be enjoyed in cycles of three: heat, cold, relax.

Spaces are beautifully designed with comfortable seating, from relaxation beds to swinging hammocks. My person fave is a room with heated wooden rows of benches and soft music. Tune into the gentle soundscape or grab a headset off the wall and choose your own melody.

A complete menu of massage services (facials, biological exfoliation, foot care and more) are offered here. The dining area overlooks the site, with its wooded, tree-filled scenery that comes alive at night (I hope to return for an evening visit).

Don’t miss out on the German ritual of Aufguss that takes place twice daily at the Finnish sauna. The ritual begins with a gong at its entrance.

Two of Thermea’s team have received extensive Sauna Meister training in Germany and the Nordik Spa-Nature Group is a member of the German Saunabund association that both regulates and supervises the Aufguss rituals amongst its 900 members.

The music starts and soon, three ice balls containing essential oils are put on top of the sauna as water is splashed on them to create the heat. The sauna meister envelops us with scent by performing a dance with a towel. Soon, the room heats and you begin to feel the sweat beading on your body.

A second and third wave of scent is repeated along with the dance. For lack of better word, intense comes to mind. Aufguss redefines the word detox!

You’ll exit to large bowls of crushed ice to slowly bring your body heat down, and outside the door, a staff member offers up fresh fruit.

There’s only one thing left to do: walk a few feet further and dip into either cool or “wakey-wakey” cold pools.

And spend quality chill time in one of the indoor or outdoor relaxation areas.

Post-sauna, head over to the exfoliation room for a great scrub and shower. On offer are two types of essential oil salts: lavender and menthol/eucalyptus. The space is located inside the Vaporo building, between the eucalyptus and orange steam rooms.

Regenerate with a meal at the onsite restaurant (aptly titled Restö), where a selection of light dishes and gourmet fare await. You can dine either in your swimsuit/bathrobe or in street clothes. The menu is complemented by a great selection of loose-leaf teas, wine and cocktails.

For a sweet tooth, go for the s’mores experience where you can roast your own marshmallows around the fire on the restaurant patio. House made graham crackers, Callebaut dark chocolate and fluffy marshmallows, ready to go (there’s hot cocoa on the menu as well).

All dishes use locally-sourced ingredients and I can highly recommend their shaved beet salad and grilled provolone sandwich, made ultra tasty with Thermëa’s own house cured bacon.

I do hope that Winnipegers realize what a special treat they have at their doorstep. If you’re out this way, don’t miss the chance to enjoy a day in these amazing pools, spas, saunas and relaxing restful places amongst the nature. Packages and dining events are available to customize your experience.

Thermëa by Nordik Spa-Nature is located at 775 Crescent Drive in Winnipeg.

I was a guest of the spa. Opinions, as always, are my own.

Thank you so much for writing such a great article about Thermea! My husband and I are the ones you initiated bringing the spa to Winnipeg and are so thrilled our dream came true. Thermea is a wonderful place to get away from it all right in the heart of Winnipeg. It holds a very special place our heart and we are always so happy to read such good reviews. I am so happy you enjoyed your time there.
