ECM four talents

Véronique Lacroix will conduct the Ensemble contemporain de Montréal (ECM+)’s seventh Canadian tour next month at SFU Woodwards’ Fei & Milton Wong Experimental Theatre. From Banff to Ottawa, with stops in Calgary, Vancouver, Winnipeg, Montreal, Toronto, and London, the ECM+ invites music lovers across the country to discover new works by four of the most brilliant up and coming Canadian composers. Writer and composer Nicolas Gilbert will be on stage with the 10 ECM+ musicians and its conductor, to guide the audience through four new works that are as unique as they are fascinating. The evening will also include a piece for soloist violinist Véronique Mathieu.

Gabriel Dharmoo (Québec), Annesley Black (Ontario), Marielle Groven (Nova Scotia) and Riho Esko Maimets (Ontario) were chosen for the Generation 2012 contest, now one of the most popular composition competitions in the country. In March 2012, in collaboration with the musicians and artistic director of the ECM+, the four composers were featured in live composition workshops, providing the public an insider’s look at musical experimentation.

The Generation 2012 final concert is a unique event for those wishing to experience the process of musical creation directly from the composer while conductor and host reveal some of the secrets of their work on stage. Through Black’s overflowing imagination, Maimets’ peaceful strength, the intriguing timbres of Groven and the characteristic chants of Dharmoo, listeners will discover that there are as many different methods of composing as there are composers.

The audience will also be asked to vote for their favourite piece. The winning composer will be awarded the Generation 2012 Audience Choice Award — a $1500 prize plus a commission from Paramirabo Ensemble.
