Great news, Vancouver! Coast Restaurant now offers weekend brunch. The popular Alberni Street dining spot had previously offered holiday-themed brunch service but no continual weekend brunch.

Ringing in Canada Day with mimosas

We kicked off Canada Day by toasting their first day of brunch, mimosas in hand. Bloody Mary, Kir Royale, Ariel, and Classic and Decked Caesars round out the main brunch drinks, with shellfish and a great selection of Bargain Bennys ($9.95 each) making this well-loved establishment a great way to kick off a weekend downtown.

Frenchie fans can now enjoy the sociable maitre’d (formerly of Joe Fortes) at Coast. He joined forces with Glowbal a few months ago, and it’s great to see his smiling face gracing the room at Coast.

Chef's selection of a dozen East & West coast oysters

We started with a chef’s selection of East and West coast oysters (there’s over a dozen on the menu per availability). We liked that the dozen were chosen with regard to variance of brininess and size. They’re served up with classic cocktail sauce, lemon wedges, horseradish and mignonette.

The lobster free-range omelette is filled with succulent Atlantic lobster meat and avocado, served with hollandaise sauce and seasoned fries (not too salty and maybe just a tad addictive).

The stuffed French toast contains a slightly-sweetened cream cheese (whipped up with strawberries), drizzled with caramel and topped with sliced strawberries and icing sugar, a very easy dish to share.

Both dishes are excellent, well plated and perfectly portioned (the French toast is normally served with almond butter and whipped yogurt, but we were in the mood for maple syrup on this day of celebrating all things Canadian).

Coast also offers two indulgent seafood towers, one priced at $89.95 and loaded with shucked oysters, tiger prawns, scallop ceviche, mussels, Snow and Dungeness crabs, Atlantic lobster and ahi tuna poke. The iconic Coast Tower ($139.95) adds a selection of sushi rolls, nigiri and sashimi.

Coast Restaurant/upstairs dining

Executive Chef Mark Greenfield and Sous Chef Brad Scharien have created a well-rounded menu that includes five Benny variations (classic, avocado and wild mushroom, Montreal smoked meat, crab & artichoke, smoked salmon), a wild mushroom frittata and chicken and waffles.

If you’re not an egg and toast fan, there’s a selection of salads (including gluten-free options), appetizers, Ocean Wise-sanctioned seafood plus fish & chips to enjoy either in the inviting dining room or out on the patio.

The music is classic rock (at least on the morning we were there), the atmosphere relaxed and food West coast comfort. We highly recommend a visit here to kick off the weekend (brunch is served Saturday and Sunday, 11 am to 3 pm).
