Circle Craft Cooperative is pleased to present a group exhibition of its members in celebrating its 40th anniversary. Circle Craft 40 Years and Beyond starts today at the HSBC Pendulum Gallery with 44 members exhibiting through August 23.

Forty years ago, Circle Craft Cooperative was formed in Victoria, BC to support the viability and growth of craft in British Columbia. A measure of its success can be seen in the works created by today’s members, works that push the boundaries of “the applied arts.”

In its 40th anniversary celebrations, Circle Craft Cooperative’s goal is to showcase to the world the excellence of their members, both in technical skills and in personal visions for the future of craft.

This show marks an important anniversary and a recognition of the past, but it’s also a show about the future. The exhibit highlights both present and future artistic expressions via craft by Circle Craft’s members, both who have been with the cooperative since the early years and those who have recently joined.

A common thread connecting many the organization’s exhibiting members is that they make both utilitarian and sculptural forms, each idiom informing and inspiring the other.

The more functional objects have a ready showcase in the Granville Island store; the grander works of imagination have a more difficult time finding public exposure. Each member has taken their craft beyond the ordinary, moving their medium forward into new territory due to their technical skills and their imagination.
